Chennai Rain: What is the reason for the floods in Chennai?

Chennai came to a standstill with several parts of the city reporting extensive waterlogging due to heavy showers overnight. The record rainfall also prompted authorities to open up sluice gates of three city reservoirs to let out surplus water. Several pictures and videos showed cars submerged under water, uprooted trees and people being rescued on rubber boats in various parts of the city.
