Golfing Star Greg Norman, cheered on by huge crowds, carried the Olympic torch across Sydney's spectacular Harbour Bridge at dawn on Friday as the flame neared the end of its 100-day odyssey across Australia. With Olympic fever gripping the city before the Games opening on Friday night, an excited Norman said, ‘‘When you see that many people with a smile on their face then we must be doing something right.'' One million people packed downtown Sydney on Thursday night to welcome the torch to the city that has vowed to party 24 hours a day till the end of the games. Norman told Channel 7, ''It has kind of lifted this country up, not that we needed a lift, it's lifted this country up in a huge way.''
The torch will light the Olympic cauldron in Stadium Australia at Friday night's opening ceremony. But who has the ultimate honour of launching the Olympics with the flame is one of the most closely guarded secrets of the games. Bureau Report
