Former Bangladesh President Hussain Mohammad Ershad has been sentenced to five-year simple imprisonment. The Dhaka High Court, passing the judgment on Thursday, found him guilty of corruption and fined him 55 million taka, and or incase of a default further two years of imprisonment. A high court bench upheld the verdict passed by a lower court and scrapped Ershad`s membership in Parliament. The bench has also ordered him to surrender before it immediately. The high court ordered the confiscation of a multi-storeyed building and the land which belongs to the former general. The lower court had sentenced Ershad to seven years’ imprisonment in 1993 for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. Six other accused include his wife Raushan and former minister Abdus Sattar, who faced charges of complicity in the case. Ershad seized power in 1982 and ruled the country with an iron hand for eight years before giving in following a popular democracy campaign in 1990.
