The toll in heavy rains, ravaging several parts of Andhra Pradesh has risen to 120 with rain-related incidents pouring in from across the state even as Army and Indian Air Force Were engaged in evacuating people from marooned areas and supplying food packets. Twenty-six bodies have been recovered since Thursday night after rainwaters started receding in several areas which got a respite from the rain fury, that had inundated over 300 villages, official sources said.
The IAF helicopters, which rescued over 150 people on yesterday, continued their operations today. The coastal district of Guntur was the worst affected accounting for 37 deaths followed by the state capital (20) while 13 deaths due to house collapses and drowning were reported from Nalgonda. Among other casualties, in Cuddapah and Kurnool, 11 people each were killed, while ten died in Medak, six in Nellore and four each in Krishna and Prakasam districts, official sources said. Rain-related incidents were also reported from West Godavari, Warangal, Khammam and Nizamabad and enumeration of the bodies was still on, they said.
The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad had received 24 cm rainfall till yesterday, the highest in the last 46 years, leading to inundation of as many as 110 low-lying localities.
Rescue work was on for people stranded in submerged reas, particularly those abutting Musi River. Over 35,700 people were shifted to relief camps in the city.
Bureau Report “There are chances of violence if theatres start screening movies. We do not want to take a risk,” Maruthi added. He said if the condition improves, the KFCC would again meet to decide upon reopening theatres.
