Deposed Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif's wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz has demanded that the culprits of the 1971 debacle should be punished saying it is not in the national interest to forget such disasters. She told reporters in Islamabad on Thursday that army ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf's assertion that there was no need to re-investigate the 1971 debacle and Hamoodur Rehman Commission report would not serve the national interest. She said that the national criminals, whether civilians or armed forces personnel, should be brought to justice and there should be no discrimination. There should be no leniency towards the culprits.
“It is ironic that the culprits who broke the country into half are on the loose and a hero like Nawaz Sharif is behind bars,” She said. She said that the former premier had been implicated in the plane hijacking case to legitimise the military rule but the way Sharif's lawyer Azizullah Sheikh had argued during the proceedings in the Sindh High Court showed that a plan was hatched to overthrow the elected government.
