Fashion designers from India have carved a niche for themselves in the international fashion scene with their exquisite, thematically intense and inimitable dresses and their work is being noticed and compared to some of the top designers of the world. This was evident in the Tarun Tahiliani Show at a five star-hotel in New Delhi on Thursday evening where he unveiled his new Fall Collection-2000. Delhi's glitterati were witness to some top-of-the-line designs from the haute couturier's grandmaster. The first part of the show featured cocktail clothing, which was followed by evening-wear with the focus on exquisite detail- a niche in which Tahiliani called as India's Karl Lagerfield by the fashion divas of the West, stands tall, even amid gifted peers. The last part featured enthralling bridal outfits. The collection was a veritable ‘douanier rousseau’ dream with drapes in ivory Tibetan red and black, wrapped and tucked around the body, classic Benares brocades infused with new life in creations ranging from corsets to pedal pushers. Allied to this was the little Indian cocktail dress, the Kurta, in a stunning feat of tailoring.
There was Chikan work in many hues, which had been used in a line of separates, and there was Mukaish in burgundy, skin tone and fresh aqua on net, velvets, georgette and brocade. Finally there were jewel lines - master drapes, the finest embroidery and studded crystal on fabric from lame to brocade to chiffon. The menswear featured sheer kurtas, sherwanis and chogas. Tahiliani first came into the limelight when he designed a wedding dress for Jemima Khan, wife of Imran Khan and then created an outfit for her, which she wore to pose for the cover of ‘Vogue’ magazine. His work has been distinctive for its finish, perfection and imagination.
The show was sponsored by ‘Ensemble’, India's first haute couture store, ‘Air India’, the famous grouse, ‘Showbiz’ and ‘Wahindia.com’. The choreography was done by former model Mehr Jesia Rampal. Some of the top models who catwalked the ramp were Madhu Sapre, Simar Duggal, Vidisha Pavate, Ajay Balhara, Ajay Mallick and Parveen Sirohi. Bureau Report
