New Delhi, Aug 28: The much-touted Award ceremony at the President's House to award the outstanding sportspersons of the year on Tuesday will be robbed off its sheen due to the absence of hockey captain Ramandeep Singh, veteran hockey player Dhanraj Pillay, athletes Gulab Chand and Gurmeet Kaur and boxing coach Capt. Hawa Singh. Shrouded under the match-fixing scandal no cricketer has been awarded this year in any of the categories. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award winner former hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay and Arjun award winner Ramandeep Singh are away in Australia to train for the Sydney Olympics starting on Sept 15. Long-distance runner Gulab Chand and sprinter Gurmeet (both Arjun awardees) are participating in the Asian Track and Field Championships in Jakarta. Legendary boxer and two times Asian gold medal winner and former coach Capt Hawa Singh, who has been selected for the Dronacharya Award, died recently of cardiac arrest. President K.R. Narayanan will give away the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dronocharya Awards, Arjuna Awards and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for the year 1999 at a glittering ceremony. The Indian government of gives four categories of awards for excellence in sports. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for this year will be presented to Dhanraj Pillai for his outstanding contribution to hockey. The award, instituted in 1991-92 consists of a medal, a scroll of honour and Rs 3 lakh. Kenneth Own Bosen (atheletics), Capt Hawa Singh (Boxing) (posthumous) and Ajay Sirohi (Weightlifting) will receive the Dronacharya Award. Each awardee is given a statuette of Guru Dronacharya, a scroll of honour and a cash prize of 2.50 lakh. Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar will receive the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for 1999.
