Gupta's appointment has the full support of the Bengal Assembly, the state government said on Friday.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting that was also attended by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"Today at the meeting it has been decided that Girish Gupta will be appointed as the next chairman of the state Human Rights Commission," PTI quoted state parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee as saying.

Currently, the commission is headed by ex-Bengal DGP Naparajit Mukherjee.
