Trinamool Congress activists on Saturday gheraoed a local police station in city's eastern Tangra area following lock-up death of an under trial, claimed to be the party's follower on Friday night. Even as the police maintained that the under trial, Bapi Karmakar, committed suicide by hanging himself from ceiling of the lock-up, Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandopadhyay alleged the police beat the accused to death inside the lock-up.
A large number of Trinamool activists gheraoed the police station alleging police atrocities inside the lock-up.
Bandopadhyay said that his party would take up with the Union Home Ministry on the innumerable cases of lock-up deaths in West Bengal, besides the administration's clever move to remove bodies from either lock-ups or the morgues to suppress facts.
Police said that the body had been sent to the state-run morgue at NRS hospital.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress called a 12-hour bandh in two wards in Tangra area on Sunday to protest the death.
