New Delhi, May 14: Indian carpet exports increased 6.32 per cent to Rs 2590 crore in 2002-03 from Rs 2436 crore in 2001-02. According to the latest updates from the Indo-German Export Promotion Project (IGEP), US and Germany are the two largest markets for Indian hand made carpet.

At present Indian carpet industry's share in the global market stands at 18 per cent compared to 0.7 per cent of India's total share in the world market. India is facing tough competition from Nepal, China and Iran, IEGP said adding the carpet industry needs to focus on new designs and penetrate into new markets to raise its global share.

The industry should diversify its products to new markets like Australia, Japan, Spain and future European Union members like Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary to increase its share in the world market. The IEGP said introduction of 'Rugmark' label, guaranteeing a foreign buyer that a carpet has been manufactured without illegal child labour, has also helped in boosting exports of Indian carpets world wide.
