With this honour, Maxwell will become the third Aussie player to feature as a captain of an IPL team, this season. Steve Smith for Rising Pune Supergiants and David Warner for Sunrisers Hyderabad, being the other two.

The Aussie batsman took over the role from Murali Vijay who in turn had succeeded Proteas batsman David Miller after the team sucummbed in the first five matches last year. Although his selection does come as a surprise given his lack of experience in the role and when the team features Eoin Morgan, captain of England's limited overs team and Darren Sammy, West Indies T20 captain who recently led his PSL side Peshwar Zalmi to title.

Known for his routined uncoventional shots, Maxi been a key player for the Punjab team in the 2014 edition, thus earning the player of the tournament that year. However, he failed to impress in the very next edition and was also not part of the squad for most matches last year.

Along with, Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Shaun Marsh are the other two Australians to feature on the team list, who are also touring India for the Test series.
