Madurai, Dec 10: Police rescued 11 bonded labourers, most of them from Tamil Nadu, who were slogging in sweet factories at Nanded in Maharashtra and brought here today, police said here. Police said the bonded labourers were not even allowed to write letters to their parents and relatives and were forced to work from early morning till late night.

Police came to know about the bonded labourers from one Kalimuthu, a native of Periyar in Tamil Nadu, who was rescued by his parents about a year ago from Nanded.

Kalimuthu, with an intention to rescue other bonded labourers, gave a detailed complaint to Peraiyur Police Station in the district.

Acting on the complaint, a police team, comprising an inspector, SI and five constables was formed and was sent to Nanded district by the police officials.

District collector B Chandramohan also gave a fax to Nanded district collector to help the police team for rescuing the bonded labourers.

Of the rescued, three labourers belonged to Mumbai, Kerala and Pondicherry and they were admitted to an orphanage here.

The labourers would be handed over to their parents today, police said. Bureau Report
