Chandigarh, Dec 01: The statewide crackdown on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) activists continued for the second successive day yesterday with Punjab Police arresting around 1,500 workers and detaining many others, even as party chief Parkash Singh Badal said he would seek bail from Ropar court today in the alleged graft case against him and his family members.
Accepting the decision of party's Political Affairs Committee (PAC) committee meeting here recently directing Badal to seek bail, the Akali leader decided to appear before the court today.
"I will appear before the ropar court tomorrow and seek bail, both anticipatory and regular," he told reporters here.
"It is the programme of the party to reach Ropar and not mine ... This case will go for long and if I don't seek bail our party will suffer," he said adding the programme would be peaceful."
Badal was ordered by the court to appear before it today after Punjab Vigilance Bureau (PVB), following months of investigations, filed a chargesheet against him, his wife Surender Kaur, their son Sukhbir Singh Badal and three others in an alleged graft case.
Police said around 1,500 workers, mostly SGPC members, district Akali leaders and former chairmen of boards and corporations owing allegiance to Badal, were rounded up.
The State Home Department said that in view of the 'threats' by the Sad to collect 40,000 workers in Ropar to 'subvert' the due process of law during Badal's appearance there, the government has rounded up about 1200 persons, including MLAs.
