Straffan, July 07: Briton Phillip Price collected 550,000 U.S. dollars -- easily the biggest win of his career -- with a one-shot victory in the European Open at the K Club in the Irish Republic.
Price, 36, led the event from start to the finish on Sunday (July 6) but needed a birdie four at the last to complete his third European Tour win with a 16-under-par total of 272 following a closing 70. The Welshman, who beat the then world number two Phil Mickelson in helping Europe wrest the Ryder Cup from the United States last year, finished one clear of Scotsman Alastair Forsyth (68) and 49-year-old Zimbabwean Mark McNulty (68). The $550,000 winner's cheque takes Price to sixth in the European order of merit. His previous two tour wins both came in the Portuguese Open (1994 and 2001).
