Janata Party on Sunday welcomed the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance but asked the government to minimise the draconian aspects of the bill. The ordinance to bring into force the Prevention of Terrorism Act is a necessary piece of legislation at this junction. The government should now try to minimise the draconian aspect of the bill by deleting those clauses which make it mandatory on journalists to disclose their sources, party president Subramanian Swamy said in New Delhi in a statement. Even the existing police powers to arrest under the Indian Penal Code for cognizable offences have been and are greatly misused. But that cannot be an argument for scrapping the IPC itself, Swamy said. He criticised the political parties including Congress for opposing POTO saying any such stand would go against the national interest. Bureau Report
