Unprecedented security arrangements in Anantnag

Srinagar, May 05: Unprecedented security arrangements have been made in and around the 1049 polling booths of Anantnag parliamentary constituency of Jammu and Kashmir going to polls today.
More than 150 companies of police and security forces have already taken position across the constituency to instill sense of security among the nearly 10 lakh voters and to thwart any militant attempts to disrupt the polls, officials said.
Authorities have declared almost all of the 1049 polling stations in the constituency, spread over 16 assembly segments in Anantnag (10) and Pulwama (six) districts, as hyper- sensitive or sensitive in view of threat posed by strong militant presence in the South Kashmir area and across the nearby Pir Panjal Range.
Only 42 polling stations have been categorised as normal while 603 booths are hyper-sensitive and 404 sensitive.
It will be a tough test for the security forces as torrential rains and unseasonal snowfall in the valley last week had temporarily shifted the focus from elections to tackle any flash flood situation. Officials believe that the three days of rains gave militants as much time to step up their activities.
Militants intensified their activities in the twin districts of Anantnag and Pulwama after the first two phases of polls on April 20 and April 26 in Baramulla and Srinagar constituencies carrying out several attacks on election related activities.
However, as the flood threat receded, the security forces intensified patrolling, random search and frisking operations, leading to a relatively incident free day in the constituency yesterday.
