Dhaka, Feb 02: Leader of Bangladesh's main Opposition Party Awami League Sheikh Hasina was today granted bail in corruption charges over the purchase of Russian-made MIG-29 fighter jets.

The Opposition leader was granted bail of 100,000 taka or $ 1,724 by a dhaka special court. She is accused of having cost the national exchequer seven billion taka or $ 123 million in a 1999 deal for eight mig-29 planes from Russia. Bureau of anti-corruption on January 29 submitted a chargesheet against Hasina and six others in the MIG purchase case. The case was filed in December 2001, within two months of formation of the alliance government led by Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Six other accused persons including former army chief Lt. Gen Mustafizur Rahman, Air Vice Marshal Jamal Uddin Ahmed, former air chief and former defence secretary Syed Yusuf Hossain were also granted bail in the case. Later, addressing hundreds of supporters who gathered outside the court, hasina said the case was politically motivated.

"I saved money by state-to-state purchase of the aircrafts and now I am facing this false charge. This is nothing but a step to harass me; people should get united to free the country from misrule," she said.
