Guwahati, Dec 05: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today urged Defence Minister George Fernandes to ensure adequate paramilitary forces to the state for effective anti-insurgency operations. Gogoi raised the matter when Fernandes called on him and held discussion on the prevailing situation in the state in the wake of the recent anti-Bihari violence which claimed 56 lives.
Gogoi said as per Centre's assessment Assam required 180 companies of paramilitary forces but it has only 111 companies, besides the 25 sent in the wake of the recent violence centering around railway recruitment.
He said the state was still short of the required forces and urged Fernandes not to withdraw the 25 companies sent by the Centre.
More forces are required to check any attempt to disrupt the unity of the nation, he said attributing the recent killings of Biharis in the state to the banned Ulfa.
