Beijing, Jan 15: China has offered to host direct talks between the US and North Korea in a bid to find an early and peaceful solution to the nuclear issue. Stressing that dialogue was the most effective way to end the standoff between the two countries, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhang Qiye said yesterday that China was willing to host direct talks between the us and North Korea if the two sides agreed.
"Dialoge is the most effective way to settle the issue and the most important thing at present is to resume talks between all parties concerned, which is crucial to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula," the spokesperson said. She said China hoped that the two countries would resume talks at an early date and that no party would take any further action that could escalate tension on the Korean peninsula.
Zhang said China wanted all parties concerned to make concerted efforts to settle the issue.
Reiterating the Chinese government's position on the issue, Zhang said it disagreed with Pyongyang's withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and advocated de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. Maintaining an international mechanism of nuclear non-proliferation was in the interest of the international community, Zhang said.
Pyongyang says it will address US security concerns only if Washington signs a non-aggression pact with it. However, Washington has rejected the demand, at the same time stating that the US has no intention of attacking North Korea.
