New Delhi, Mar 16: The Election Commision today said that it would conduct an inquiry into the alleged 'misuse' of the newly announced social security scheme by the Bharatiya Janata Party for political benefits.
In a press conference Deputy Election Commissioner A N Jha said an ''inquiry would be conducted and proper action will be taken''. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) had demanded that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee must explain how he allowed himself to be associated with a ''non-existent and fraud''social security scheme meant for the ''benefit'' of over 370 million workers in the unorganised sector.
'Labour Minister Saheb Singh has to resign and Vajpayee cannot escape the responsibility of his party subverting the so-called scheme for political benefits. The BJP in Mumbai is collecting names and money from potential beneficiaries ,'' CPI(M) politburo member Sita Ram Yechuri said.
The Congress had demanded resignation of the Labour Minister for'' misusing'' the newly announced social security scheme, which the Left Party described as a ''bogus and fraud'' scheme not supported by funds in the budget. The Congress also demanded that the CBI take cognizance of the ''open corruption''.
