Srinagar, June 14: The call by militant outfit Al-umar Mujahideen for a day long strike to protest the arrest of senior Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani evoked little response today, official sources said. Shops and business establishments opened as ususal and transport services were normal, they said. However, many educational institutions remained closed.
Government and semi-government establishments were functioning normally, they said. Al-umar chief Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar while giving the call for strike also urged the people to pray for the health of the senior hurriyat leader, who is now lodged in Ranchi jail.
Zargar along with Masood Azhar, chief of Jaish-e-Mohhamad, was released in December 1999 in exchange of passengers of an Indian Airlines plane, which was hijacked from Kathmandu. Bureau Report
