Dhaka, Aug 17: A swollen river burst its banks in Bangladesh today, inundating dozens of villages amid forecasts that more rains could add to the suffering of millions displaced by earlier floods, relief officials said. The Yamuna river in the north of the country overflowed, leaving at least 2,000 people displaced or stranded in their villages, a relief official said on condition of anonymity.
It was third round of monsoonal flooding to hit the low-lying river delta nation since June.
"Thousands of people are yet to return to their homes devastated by the earlier floods," said the relief official in Sirajganj district, 100-km northwest of Dhaka. "The new flooding will cause immense miseries to these people," he said.
There were no reports of fresh casualties.
At least 157 people have been killed and nearly 7 million displaced in Bangladeshi floods.
