Lucknow, Feb 14: Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnukant Shastri has said a final decision regarding the resignation of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shailendra Kumar Singh over political interference in police matters, would be taken by the state government. Shastri said last evening that he had sent the faxed resignation letter to the government.
''I may be the appointing authority, but the decision is to be taken by the popular government,'' he said.
State Principal Home Secretary Anil Kumar, confirming that the letter had been received from the Secretariat of the Governor, said the government was consulting legal experts on the status of the resignation and its implications.
Shastri said the government had been taking ''all necessary steps'' regarding law and order situation in the state.
''I had discussed the issue with the state home secretary after the death of the kin of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,'' he said.
Meanwhile, a delegation of State Provincial Police Services (PPS) Officers' Association met the Governor at Raj Bhawan this evening to urge him not to accept the DSP's resignation.
Shastri said he had sent the memorandum of the PPS association to the Chief Minister for his consideration.
Association president Sayeed Wasim Ahmed told reporters that they had urged the Governor not to accept the resignation as Shailendra was a young and energetic officer. Bureau Report
