London, Oct 24: Amnesty International today called
on Chechen rebels holding more than 700 people in a Moscow
theatre to release the hostages unconditionally and on the
government to refrain from any disproportionate use of force.
"Hostage-taking is simply unacceptable in any circumstances. People's lives are put at risk and their rights simply ignored," said Irene Khan, secretary general of the London-based Human Rights Organisation.
"We are calling on those responsible to release the hostages immediately, unconditionally, and unharmed," she added.
"While recognizing the right, and indeed the duty of states to protect their citizens, amnesty international is also calling on the Russian authorities to ensure that any use of force and firearms is fully consistent with international standards," she added.
