Giridih (Jharkhand), Nov 07: Thirty-five activists of the banned Maoist Communist Centre today surrendered before the police in the presence of Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi, pledging to shun violence and join the mainstream.

An official spokesman said here that prodded by the state energy minister, Lalchand Mahato, the MCC men gave themselves up before the police and the chief minister at a simple function organised at Nawadih in Bokaro district this afternoon. The extremists pledged to shun violence and join the mainstream, the spokesman said.

Speaking on the occasion, Marandi said that the Jharkhand government had formulated a rehabilitation package for such extremists. Under the package, the government would provide one acre of land, a house under Indira Awas Yojana and Rs 10,000 to each of the extremists.

Besides, the government would also explore the possibility of withdrawal of the cases against them after undertaking a thorough review.
