Srinagar, Aug 23: No nominations were filed on the first day after notification for the first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir was issued yesterday.
"No nominations were filed yesterday, let us hope the activities would pick up today or tomorrow," chief electoral officer Promod Jain told reporters here.
Notification were issued by the Election Commission for first of the four-phased polls for 26 constitutencies in Baramaulla, Kupwara, Leh, Kargil, Rajouri and Poonch districts.
Nomination papers can be filed till August 29 and elections will be held on September 16.
Asked about a clash between supporters of ruling National Conference and Awami League at a public rally in Sonawari area of Baramulla district yesterday, Jain said "it is very unfortunate. We are looking into the matter and have asked for a report."
The CEO said no formal complaint has been lodged about the incident where security forces had to fire a few rounds in the air to disperse the mob.

Jain said "we will ensure that security forces do not create a situation that disturbs the process of providing a level playing field to all contestants in the polls."

On the reported refusal by employees from Punjab to perform election duties in Jammu and Kashmir, he said "I am in touch with my Punjab counterpart over the matter."
