Angry villagers hacked to death two tribal rebels, while two more people, including a militant, were killed in separate attacks in Assam, officials said Thursday. The Army said in a statement that residents of Tardubi village in Karbi Anglong district, 320 km from Guwahati, killed two members of the United People's Democratic Solidarity militant group late Wednesday. It said the villagers armed with machetes overpowered the heavily-armed guerrillas and hacked them to death.

The group is campaigning for self-rule for the ethnic Karbi tribe in eastern Assam.

In another incident, soldiers shot dead a militant belonging to the same group in adjoining Cachar district.
Tribal separatists belonging to the banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland, meanwhile, attacked a crowded village market late Wednesday in western Assam, shooting dead one shopper and wounding five more.
