Britain's ambassador to the United Nations, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, insisted Monday that a war against Iraq was not inevitable and that the "UN route" was still the preferred option.
"I think this needs a little bit more time before this comes to the fever pitch," Greenstock told BBC television.
He said that Britain would still prefer to try to remove Iraq's weapons of mass destruction through the "UN route" before backing US-led military strikes.
"We have got to look at the circumstances of whether Iraq poses such a threat and whether there is no other alternative (to military action)... and we haven't reached that point," he said.
"The complexities are such that a lot of further analysis has to be done. We have to see whether the UN route, which has recently been reactivated by the Iraqis, may bear some fruit." Bureau Report
