Srinagar, June 18: Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Tara Chand today directed the state government to expedite the compensation and relief cases of victims of cross-border shelling. "The government should expedite the compensation and relief cases of those affected by cross-border shelling. The victims should also be given kerosene and ration as soon as possible," Chand said in his direction during the question hour.
He said the government should speedily implement the measures announced for rehabilitation of people along the zero line.
Earlier, replying to the main question, state minister for parliamentary affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri informed the house that seven persons had been killed and 47 others injured in cross-border shelling since the beginning of this year.
He said relief and compensation cases were being processed and it would be provided to the affected people after a meeting of the screening committee set up for the purpose.
The screening committee is due to meet next month to decide on the cases based on spot verification of the loss caused by the shelling, Veeri said.
Replying to a supplementary, Veeri said the government had already a policy in place for shelling shelters to protect the residents of border areas.
The house witnessed uproarious scenes over the issue as members of opposition National Conference and the ruling alliance accused each other of neglecting border residents.
The Speaker, in an attempt to restore order in the house, passed the direction to the government. Bureau Report
