Athens, May 19: Five cities have survived a cull of contenders to host the 2012 Summer Olympics after an initial shortlist of candidates was virtually halved by the International Olympic Committee. Delegates from the nine nations battling to host the 2012 Summer Olympics arrive to learn which of them are already out of the race.
The International Olympic Committee in Switzerland announced its was ditching four - Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul and Leipzig. Now only Paris, New York, Moscow, London and Madrid remain on the shortlist. Any of those could be dropped in a year's time if the IOC isn't convinced they can do a good job.

Paris, which last hosted the Olympics 80 years ago, is seen as the front runner.
