Mumbai, Sept 25: BJP today claimed that DF government
could have averted the August 25 twin bomb blasts in Mumbai if
it had acted upon a letter written by a vigilant citizen about
unlawful activities in suburban Andheri, from where the
perpetrators of the blasts were subsequently arrested.
"Timely action by the state government on a letter
written by the Andheri resident could have averted blasts that
claimed over 50 lives and rocked the country's commercial
capital", BJP state unit leader Vinod Tawde told reporters.
Substantiating his claim, the BJP leader distributed copies of the letter written by one M S Kureshi and given to the Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde's office on March 28, 2003. A copy of the letter was also given to Minister of State for Home Rajendra Darda on the same day.
Kureshi in his letter had named some "anti-social elements", whom he claimed to be having links with the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and planning to carry out subversive activities in the city.

The letter also claimed that these persons were being
provided with arms and training to use them from a Madarsa in
Saibaba Nagar.
"We want to know what action the government initiated
after receiving the letter?", Tawde asked. The government
should take stringent action against police officials for
failing to act upon the letter, he demanded.
Reacting to Tawde's charge, MPCC General Secretary Sanjay Dutt said "the charges are wild and baseless. They are made with ulterior motive". Bureau Report
