Madurai, May 19: The inauguration of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has been scheduled for May 24, pending Central government notification, Chief Justice of the court B Subashan Reddy said today. Justice Reddy, who inspected the court building, told reporters that "the bench is ready for inauguration on May 24, pending government notification."
The bench was first scheduled to be inaugurated on April 13, the Tamil new year day, but was postponed indefinitely with officials stating that some infrastructural modifications suggested by the court were not completed by then. Justice Reddy said the modifications had now been carried out and Chief Justice Of India S Rajendra Babu had also agreed for the new inauguration date.
Stating that he had already written to the Centre about the 'satisfactory' infrastructural facilities and was hopeful that the notification would be issued, Justice Reddy said filing of cases would begin on May 24. The vacation court would commence its sittings from May 25.
He said seven judges would be posted for the bench on a non-permanent basis.
The Tamil Nadu government also had released an additional amount of Rs Three crore and hence there would not be any problem in inaugurating the bench.
Replying to a question, the Chief Justice said he had asked for nine more judges and recommended names.
