Coimbatore, Mar 13: In a move to protect the interest of the farmers of Coimbatore and Erode districts, major opposition parties have drawn up a three-phased agitation plan to protest against the construction of a weir across Bhavani river at Mukkali by Kerala government. The decisions, taken at a recent meeting of political parties and organisations, barring AIADMK and BJP, at Erode, was endorsed at Coimbatore last evening, CPI district secretary C Kannan said. In the first phase, meetings would be organised at selected centres in these districts from March 15 to 24, in order to create awareness among the public on the crisis. In the second phase, the parties would hold a campaign for one week from March 25, in which one lakh people would be requested to wear black badges demanding 'protect Bhavani river', Kannan said. On April 2, two-hour demonstrations would be held in front of the central and state government offices at 12 centres in the district, to draw the attention of both the governments, he said.
A meeting would be held the next day, to fix a date for holding a human chain covering the district, Kannan said.
