Chennai, Jan 03: Sarod maestro, Amjad Ali Khan, said here today that though he was not against 'westernisation', “We must not lose our separate identity' in maintaining our culture and traditions.” "We have imbibed several things from the west, but we should not lose our identity. The whole world is becoming a global village now and the coca cola and synthetic culture is seeping in. We must not forget our own identity. We must nurture and protect our traditions and culture," he told newsmen. Khan, who is here to participate in a 'jugalbandhi' concert with vocalist, Pandit Jasraj and renowned violist, Dr L Subramaniam this evening at the music academy, said one could communicate with anyone in the world through music, since music did not have any religion or language barriers. "Like water, air and fragrance, music also does not have any religion or language. "Every religion needs music".

The sarod maestro, who has entered his 50th performing year now, said Indian classical music has a 'bright future'.
Khan said our 'musical science' was developed thousands of years ago. "There are 12 notes like 'sa' 're' 'ga' 'ma'. Though the country had developed in several fields, 'none has so far created the 13th note for music. There is no room to create the 13th note," he said.
