New Delhi, Oct 09: Keeping in mind the downfall of BJP government in 1998 on the issue of onion prices, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said there was no shortfall of onions and potatoes in the national capital. She took time out from her busy schedule and visited Azadpur market to put to rest speculative reports and rumours that there was a shortage of these two commodities.
With the capital already in election mode, Congress was leaving no chance for rumours to gain momentum.
After the visit to the market, Dikshit said contrary to the impression "being created by certain mischievous elements with vested interests, the capital has an over supply of onions as well as potatoes this year".
She was accompanied by Development Minister Haroon Yusuf and other officials, an official spokesman said.
The Chief Minister said the reports about rising prices of onions were "motivated and manipulative" and people with vested interests were trying to create an artificial crisis situation.
She warned against hoarding and unfounded hiking of prices by wholesalers and said that strict action would be taken against anyone trying to do so.
Dikshit said a taskforce, to keep a constant watch on the situation, was already in place and certain pockets where hike was witnessed had already reverted to normal pricing. Bureau Report
