Hyderabad, Apr 10: Naxal threat looms large in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh with ultras giving a poll boycott call prompting state machinery to upgrade its tools to meet the menance. The People Wars Group's boycott call and threat of life to TDP and BJP candidates has cast “fear psychosis” in the naxal-infested Telengana districts of Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad and areas like Khammam and Visakhapatnam.
The state government has asked for more Central forces and advanced gadgets, including helicopters, to effectively tackle the situation during polls in the region on April 20.
Tackling law and order situation becomes more challenging as the state goes for simultaneous polls with demands for more men and material to comb through the difficult terrain of Telengana comprising hillocks, rivulets, forests, streams and wide barren lands.
A top leader of PWG, in a video cassette recently circulated to private Telugu channels, renewed the threat saying the naxals will attack any of the TDP-BJP candidate in their campaign trial. “TDP is a symbol of anti-people policies and state repression ...We are determined to eliminate them,” PWG central committee member Rajanna said in the cassettee.
Defending the recent murder of tribal welfare minister Manikumari's husband Venkatraju at Paderu, the ultra said: “Though they belong to weaker sections, they now represent the ruling class and are working for them which puts them into the category of our enemies.”
