Lucknow, Apr 30: Even though the number of voters in Uttar Pradesh has increased by over seven million during the last five years, the number of contesting candidates has gone down as compared to the 1999 Lok Sabha polls. Altogether, 1,138 candidates are in fray for 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state in this elections while in 1999 the total number of candidates' were 1,208.

However, the state witnessed a steep rise in the number of voters in the voter list to over 110 million from 100.3 million, in the past five years.

According to the statistics, 61 women contestants are also in fray among the 1,138 candidates.
The Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, from where Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is contesting the polls, has the highest number of 32 candidates, mostly independents. In 1999, the highest number of 32 candidates was in Gonda while in 1998, it was 24 in Agra.

This time, the state is going to polls in three-phases - on April 26, May 5 and 10. In the first phase already conducted, 32 LS seats in Eastern Uttar Pradesh went to polls while in the second phase elections would be held on 30 seats mostly from Central Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand. In the last phase on May 10, 18 constituencies of western up would go to polls.
