Gorakhpur, Feb 27: The Uttar Pradesh government will provide houses to poverty stricken people on low prices of Rs 40,000 each from the next financial year, state housing and urban development minister Lalji Tandon has said.
So far families only from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes living below the poverty line were provided residential houses on special rates while families from upper castes were denied this facility as they were not covered under the scheme. However, now all the families below the poverty line can avail this facility, he told the media here yesterday.
Tandon who attended the eighth Gangotri Devi Memorial All India Invitation Women's Hockey tournaments here, inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of as many as 30 projects in the city. These project would involve an investment of Rs 24 crores.
Tandon asked the authorities to maintain transparency and quality in the construction works as it was public money which was being used.
Warning corrupt officials, the urban development minister said people should work as watch-dog to identify such officials, who should be punished as per law.
