Lucknow, June 10: Uttar Pradesh Congress will soon launch a state-wide agitation against the state government's "apathetic" attitude towards the cane farmers. An important meeting of party's office-bearers, executive committee members, city and district unit presidents would be held on June 23 and 24 to chalk out the agitational programme and other details for the purpose, newly appointed president of the state congress, Jagdambika Pal told newspersons here.

Lashing out at the state and union governments for the immense hardships faced by cane growers, pal said that arrears worth over Rs 1695 crore were pending with the sugar mills till today out of which Rs 856.74 crore have to be paid by government owned sugar mills.
Pal lamented that the union and state governments' sugar policy was responsible for the problem faced by same farmers and sugar industry and called for prompt remedial steps to redress their grievances.

Pal also highlighted the serious power crisis in the state lending to erratic electricity supply and frequent power cuts not only in rural areas but also in cities.

To a question on the prevailing political situation, Pal said that the RLD MLAs have been removed from the state as both BSP BJP had the record of splitting rival parties in order to run their governments.
He said that no date has been fixed as yet for the opposition leaders to sit for chalking out their next move for bringing down the Mayawati government which has been reduced to minority following the withdrawal of support by 14 RLD MLAs.
