Union Home Minister L K Advani on Tuesday indicated that the government may convene a joint session of Parliament for getting the anti-terrorism bill passed if it
falls through in Rajya Sabha.
Briefing reporters after the BJP parliamentary party meeting, spokesman V K Malhotra said the home minister told members if it is not passed than we would have to find a way, though Advani was hopeful that it would be adopted by Parliament in a normal way. Advani, who chaired the meeting as Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was away in Japan, told the members that the government was hopeful that the legislation would get support from the Opposition as it was in national interest that political parties were united on this matter, Malhotra said.
The home minister said the government has already held discussions with Opposition parties as well as allies of the NDA on the bill and accepted all the suggestions on it, party spokesman said. Malhotra said a three-line whip has been issued to all party MPs to be present in Parliament for the next two weeks when the bill is taken up for discussion and passage.
