Berlin, Feb 10: Nicole Kidman has brought her acclaimed portrayal of English writer Virginia Woolf to the Berlin Film Festival, as Stephen Daldry`s "The Hours" screened in the competition for the golden bear.

The film, whose strong female cast also includes Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, is seen as a favourite among the 22 films contending the top prize - even though Kidman said that she was surprised to be given the lead role. Kidman said that she expected Streep to play the author, whose life and suicide echo across space and time, impacting upon the lives of the other women in this big-screen adaptation of Michael Cunningham`s Pulitzer prize-winning book. Such doubts often accompany her preparation for a role, Kidman told a news conference yesterday.

"Normally a week before filming starts, i come up with a list of actresses who would be better in the role than me," she said.

But she said that she quickly became immersed in the part, `the thing which fascinated me was the combination of incredible intellect and emotional fragility."

The film and Kidman`s performance have already been acknowledged with golden globe awards, rewarding the vision of English director Daldry, who received acclaim also for his previous feature "Billy Eliot."
