New Mexico, Oct 21: US motor racing star Al Unser Jr has been seriously injured in an accident while driving off road here. The 41-year-old was driving an all-terrain vehicle on Sunday when he went over an embankment and broke his pelvis, said his father, Al Unser Sr.
Unser Sr, a four-time Indy winner, said his son had called for help for an hour before some boys heard him.
Unser Jr's sister Mary Unser Tanner said he had "several fractures" but was not scheduled for surgery.
"He's in a lot of pain but he's going to be OK," she said, adding he was expected to be released from hospital by the end of the week.
Unser Jr made a comeback to racing this year after admitting to an alcohol problem in 2002.
He finished sixth in the Indy Racing League championship this season driving with Kelley Racing.
In June, he won his first race in nearly two years, the IRL's Bombardier 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Unser Jr won the Indianapolis 500 in 1992 and 1994 when it was a part of the Cart series, from which the IRL split in 1995, and was Cart champion in 1990 and 1994.
