Coimbatore, Jan 03: Over one lakh farmers from this region were expected to converge in the city today, as part of the ‘Farmers Protection Conference’ to draw the attention of both Centre and Tamil Nadu governments on the serious problems faced by the farming community.
Briefing reporters on the deliberations of the consultative committee of 62organisations held here today, Dr K P Ramalingam, president Federation of All Farmers Association, said it discussed the problems to be faced by the farmers following the move by the government to discontinue the power concessions given to agriculture pump-sets.
Other topics discussed include the arrears of Rs.217 crore to be paid to the sugarcane growers from various cooperative societies and reduction in the milk procurement price, he said.
The committee also decided to hold such conferences in Salem, Madurai, Tiruchy and Villupuram in the state, he said.
It had also decided to seek an audience with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa to discuss various problems, particularly on the need to continue power consensus , for which a special committee had been formed under D R Karthikeyan, former CBI director, K Chellamuthu, secretary of the federation said.
DMK general secretary, K Ambazhakan, BJP All India Secretary, L Ganesan, PMK leader, S Ramadoss, Congress working president, E V K S Elangovan, MDMK leader and Union Minister, M Kannappan and CPI secretary, R Nallakkannu and other party leaders, would be participating in the conference, he said.
