Jammu, Dec 19: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to set up a state Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) on the lines of those in other states, the Power Development Minister Mohd Sharief Niaz said today. Apart from fixing and regulating power tariff, the SERC would also advise the department on various matters involving generation of power and power development reforms, Niaz told reporters here.

The proposed commission will be chaired by the power minister and the members would also include a representative of National Hydel Power Corporation and Principal Secretary of State Power Development Department, he said.

Referring to the state government's achievements in the power sector, Niaz said 7920 lakh units of power were generated between November 2002-03 as against 4853 lakh units generated in the corresponding period of the previous year. While lower Jehlum hydel project in Baramulla (105 MW) was recommissioned in march this year on a fast track basis, five gas turbine units were put into operation at Pampore during the previous winter, he said.

The minister said loans were being negotiated with financial institutions for Baghliar project with an installed capacity of 450 MW. The state government has allocated Rs 300 crores during the current year for it and special assistance of Rs 630 crores has been promised by the Centre.
