Pune, Dec 20: Music maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi feels that a classical base is a must for any singer. Referring to the present-day film songs, the Hindustani vocalist said he just cannot make out whether these were of indigenous or western origin.
In a Tjte- -Tjte with reporters here, organised by the Pune Union of Working Journalists (PUWJ) in connection with the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Pandit Joshi, however, stated that it was for the audience to ''express disgust over such frivolousness''.
The four-day music event opens on December 26.

''The community of artistes, apart from being unorganised, is a small one and so, its voice is only a feeble one which is unlikely to be heard,'' said the maestro, brushing aside a suggestion that stalwarts like him should protest against the falling standards.
Talking about the Mahotsav, the annual classical music fiesta initiated by him as a tribute to his Guru Sawai Gandharva, and which is celebrating its golden jubilee this year, he pointed out that the festival has been attracting overwhelming response with 10,000 to 15,000 enthusiasts attending it every year.
