Washington, July 12: Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton is pushing a measure to make the federal government increase its security payments to New York City for protecting the United Nations.
New York, Chicago and Los Angeles have a long-standing arrangement with the federal government reimbursing them for protecting foreign missions.

But city officials and Clinton say that the costs of such security, especially amid heightened terrorism fears, has far outpaced the $10 million per year that the three cities now split.

Clinton has offered an amendment boosting that figure to $21 million per year, and paying the cities back for money owed in recent years, $55.9 million.

The senator said on Friday that the cost to New York's police department of protecting the UN and its missions has jumped to $18.5 million per year since the Sept 11, 2001, attacks.

The amendment was attached to a State Department bill currently in the Senate. A similar effort is expected in the House. Bureau Report
