New Delhi, Feb 01: Nearly a quarter of India's 1 billion plus people live on less than a dollar a day. But that doesn't stop the country's list of people with more than a billion rupees (US$21 million) from growing. A survey conducted by an Indian financial newspaper added 22 more names to its list of billionaires _ in rupee terms _ taking the total to 110.
The richest man in India is Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro Technologies, one of the country's leading software firms. The survey by newspaper said Premji's net worth was estimated at 314 billion rupees (US$6.5 billion).
Mukesh Ambani and his brother Anil, who own Reliance Industries Ltd. _ India's largest private company _ came in second with a combined net worth of Rs 18,900 crore (US$3.9 billion), the survey said.
There were eight women whose names featured in the latest list of billionaires. Some of them were inheritors of family wealth, while others shared the riches of their husbands. Bureau Report
