New Delhi, Jan 16: Delhi Police has been entrusted the responsibility of policing the ambitious Delhi metro rail worth thousands of crores launched with much fanfare last month, a top official said here today. The metro rail police is to be a model force and a proposal for the staff of 500 personnel has been sent to the government for sanction, Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) U K Katna told reporters here today. The personnel chosen for the force would be imparted special training keeping in mind the requirements, he said, adding the programme has already begun. At least 188 specially selected staffers have already been posted for various duties, Katna said.

The metro rail, whose first phase only is worth around Rs 10,000, was launched by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 26.
Work is on other phases of the project, aimed to provide fast track and ecologically clean public transport system in the national capital.
