The US on Tuesday warmly welcomed a narrow victory in a Swiss referendum on UN membership.
A narrow majority of 54.61 per cent approved the government-backed proposal for Switzerland to join the UN in Sunday's referendum.
"We think that Swiss entry will help strengthen the United Nations, and we'll support the process of approving Swiss entry at both the Security Council and the General Assembly levels when that comes up there," said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
"Switzerland has long been a champion of the values upon which the United Nations was founded, as well as a practical contributor to United Nations' activities," he added. Bureau Report
