Twenty-one people, including two BSF jawans and 17 militants, were killed and 15 injured in separate militancy-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since Saturday night, a police spokesman said on Sunday. At least 20 militants attempted to infiltrate into Indian territory but the troops challenged them. In the exchange of fire, five of them were killed. However, the rest including the seven injured managed to escape, they said. A police spokesman in Srinagar said militants hurled a grenade towards security forces posted near a bus stand in Kupwara in North Kashmir on Sunday afternoon injuring six people, including a BSF jawan and three policemen. The injured were rushed to hospital where the jawan succumbed to injuries.
In a similar incident in Jammu, a BSF picket in Darmari of Udhampur was attacked by militants, killing a constable and injuring four, including an inspector, the sources said. The spokesman said five militants, including three belonging to Lashker-e-Toiba outfit, were killed in encounters with security forces at Kreeri-Sangram and Buthu-Bandipora in Baramulla district of Kashmir on Saturday night. Special operations group of the state police gunned down two Hizbul Mujahideen militants in separate operations at Bemina and Hyheen-Palpora near Ganderbal in Srinagar late Saturday night, he said.
The slain militants were identified as `group commander` Manzoor Ahmad Hajam alias Shahbaz Janisar and Faqir Khan alias Shabir, the spokesman said.
